Civil wars in Africa have been a very common occurrence in recent years. Specifically the civil war in Sierra Leone is one of them. The war ended in 2002 with the help of British soldiers backing the Sierra army. The government is a republic with three branches: the legislature, the judicial, and the executive. The government is now stronger with help if the UN and in 2012 had an election without UN oversight. Then in 2014 the Ebola virus outbreak happened killing around 400 people from Sierra Leone. This issue is important to show how it happened and why civil wars are common in Africa like the Libyan Civil war that started in 2014. In 50 years I see Sierra Leone becoming a strong African nation because the help they have gotten in recent years to keep their country safe.
Yesterday:
In 1961 Sierra Leone became an independent country released from British rule. Power of the government changed after several military coups occurred. The civil war began in 1991 and ended in 2002. In 2001 the disarmament of rebels began and in 2002 45,000 people were disarmed. I picked this topic because of how horrible it was with children forced to fight against their will and so it won't be able to occur again. In the war around 50,000 people died and at least 1 million people displaced. Some estimates were that around 2.5 million people were displaced during the war. The country is now more stable with it's army stronger with the help of training from the British army and having its own elections without oversight. The government and the army of Sierra Leone is better now than what is was before the civil war started with the help form the UN and Britain.
Today:
Today Sierra Leone is Ebola free after the outbreak that happened in 2014. This deadly outbreak of the virus has killed over 400 people of Sierra Leone. The country went into a state of emergency to try to prevent the spread of the virus. In 2016 Sierra Leone is declared Ebola free for a second time after the outbreak came back after being cleared the first time. The government is now stronger and in more control of the country after the war. The government is now stable and is more likely to be able to shut down any attempts of a new civil war or military coup to take over the government.
Future:
In the future data is able to suggest that if another civil war was to happen that the government would be able to put a stop to the revolt. The army of Sierra Leone after the civil war was trained by British soldiers and had help from Britain and the UN during and after the civil war. This proposes that either Britain or the UN may be there to help also if another civil war broke out. The Ebola virus may also make a comeback with another deadly outbreak which could harm Sierra Leone, but most likely they would receive help from other nations to battle the virus. In conclusion, Sierra Leone seems to be on a rise for a strong nation.
